Dance Time

Having gone to several formal dances in the past few weeks, I've run clean through my stash of formal dresses that are appropriate for springtime weather.  A lot is at stake when picking a dress for these things.  You have to take into consideration length, tightness, movability, any extra bells and whistles that might pose a hazard while dancing, the strap situation, etc.  Dresses such as these would be ideal.

The Light is Clashing

This is my schedule for the next week and few days.
Class.  Sculpture due.  Fraternity dance.  Sleep.  Work on projects.  Running.  Sorority dance.  Sleep.  Work on projects.  Group meeting.  Last sorority meeting ever.  Work on projects.  Sleep.  Class.  Work on projects.  Sleep.  Zine due.  Capstone due.  Work on projects.  Sleep.  Class.  Work on projects.  Write outlines.  Sleep.  Final.  Work on projects.  Sleep.  Painting due.  Drawings due.  Sculpture due.  Finished with college forever.
Even with all this craziness, I can see the summit.  We won't stop here.

Move Me, Maestro

My thoughts this morning when I woke up:  'Ahhh today feels like an 80's day.'  And I wasn't thinking about the temperature.

On went a neon dress, off-the-shoulder sweatshirt, and little tennis shoes (for spontaneous dancing, naturally).  After I made my hair all big and curly, the light coming in my window was just too good to pass up, and I started dancing with myself.

Seldom Seen and Never Heard Of

New goal before graduation: document by photographic media how awesome my friends and I are, in a picture like this.

We've got the whole sorority/girly/arms around each other if you're in the middle/arm on your hip if you're on the edge thing down pat, but I look at this picture and the perfect mix of attitude, style, and cool makes me want to hang out with them.  My friends and I have come close, on occasion.

But we aren't quite there yet.  Back in the day, when we had no idea what being badass even meant, my cousins and I pulled it off effortlessly.

Now, if only we could reclaim this childhood free-spiritedness, channel it through our clothing and demeanor, and then capture it on film, I would be a satisfied graduate.

Welcome to the Dancing Sea

Versions of this really beachily awesome Stella McCartney sping 2012 dress have been all over the place recently, and it's easy to see why.

On the red carpet,

On magazine covers,

On fashion bloggers,

And in many a magazine spread.

Thaasophobia

Monotony is the lack of variety and interest; tedious repetition; continuous routine.  It is the personification of boredom, and it is one of my greatest fears.

Back to the Dawn of Fashion

One of the most classic and oldest forms of clothing also happens to be one of the simplest, involving nothing but a piece of fabric.  Wrapping, twisting, tucking, draping, and sometimes, even folding said fabric around the figure makes what is commonly known as the toga.  Even though this tradition goes back to right after the beginning of humankind, it can still be applied to modern fashion.

The Disappearing Act

This weekend at a fraternity formal, something happened that was so unbelievable, so shocking, so unbelievably shocking, that it deserves a post.  This is my friend Alyssa and I.  Notice my awesome neck tie bow and Alyssa's bright red Jessica Rabbit dress.

Around midnight after the dance, a group of us decided to put on our swimsuits and sneak down to the dock to go skinny dipping in the lake.  Alyssa was in the second wave of rebel rousers who missed the memo to change into suits first.  Thus, underwear swimming ensued and upon exiting the water, the red dress was nowhere to be found.  Three possibilities crossed my mind.

1.  We had an undercover gangster dress thief among the group.

2.  An underwater lake mermaid saw it, got jealous, and wanted it for herself.

3.  The night wind blew it off the side of the dock where it sank to its watery grave at the bottom of the lake.

The Double Axel

I played broomball for the first time this brisk april evening, which involves running around on an ice rink and hitting a mini soccer ball into a goal with a lacrosse and hockey hybrid stick.  Being experienced in the art of figure skating, it was rather interesting to be on ice without skates on.  Although it was quite the fun experience, I would rather figure skate, wearing blades and something flowy for easy movement and non-white to stand out against the ice.  Something like this perhaps.

DIY Jean Shorts (With a Twist)

1.  Cut off the legs of an old pair of jeans, albeit they still have to fit you seeing as how you will be wearing them upon completion.
2.  Cut a triangle out of each side and find some cool lacey material in a color of your preference.  Pin said material in the cutout triangle.
3.  Sew away.
4.  Unveil your new pair of really awesome, really unique, and really comfortable blue jean shorts.

Frilly Spring Time

Easter for me conjures up memories of wearing a frilly little dress (hat optional), a little basket filled with chocolate and candies atop that weird, stringy "grass" that the Easter Bunny left, going to church, fancy brunch with the extended family, and, of course, hunting for Easter eggs.  Most of the time the fluorescent colored orbs stood out in a very obvious way from their surroundings, but occasionally there were some that easily evaded our little kid eyes.  There should have been helpful little signs like this to point us in the right direction.

An Architectural Flourish

Restaurants, bars, and the dining room table dishware on Thanksgiving all provide excellent building blocks for constructing towers.  They've got coasters, straws, chopsticks, cups, napkins, utensils, etc that lend themselves perfectly to creating magical structures that display great feats of gravity, balance, and symmetry.  This is what I do to keep my hands busy at food and drink functions.

Citizen of the Night

What happens when you have a midterm semester-long project critique, a sculpture due, and a choose-your-own project that you got really ambitious with critique all in a three day period?  You don't sleep that much.  How do you look put together when you wake up fifteen minutes before class?  Here's a few ideas.

Rompers were pretty much made for those sartorially uninspired days.  No assembly required, just add shoes!

Skirts and shorts are really easy to style as well.  Throw on a slouchy, neutral colored t-shirt (or if you got six hours of sleep instead of four, you probably have enough brain power to go with a print) with some slight tuck-in action and you're good to go.  Scarves make an easy throw-it-on-as-you-walk-out-the-door accessory to keep in the arsenal as well.

Go, Ok?

Ok Go has done it again.  This video for the song Skyscrapers is a masterpiece of subtle playfulness and a kind of nonchalant beauty that plays out in a tango down a colorfully gritty urban track.  You get lost in the textures, patterns, and of course, the colors, which are the real stars of the video.  Here's a little preview in the stills below, and the link so you can see this feast for the eyes for yourself.
